NHRC issues notice to Chhattisgarh Police for Illegally Detaining and Beating a Young Lawyer

NHRC ISSUES NOTICE TO CHHATTISGARH POLICE FOR ILLEGALLY DETAINING AND BEATING A YOUNG LAWYER 
 
Amidst ever-growing agitation of the civil society and lawyers, human rights activists over the illegal detention and beating of young human right lawyer of Human Rights Law Network, Alban Toppo, at Bhairamgarh Police Station in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on the eve of Human Rights Day 10.12.09, the National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of the complaint made be Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves in this regard and has issued notice to SSP- Dantewada and SSP- Bijapur.  

In past two weeks, the issue of brutality committed upon young tribal Lawyer Alban Toppo by Chhattishgarh Police has invited sharp criticism  by eminent lawyers like Senior Advocate Prashant Bhusan, Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, activists like Medha Patkar, Justice Rajinder Sacchar among others. People’s Vigilance Committee for Human Rights wrote to Chief Minister Raman Singh in this regard. Chhattisgarh Bar Association has also raised this issue with State Authorities. 

Advocate Alban Toppo was illegally detained and badly beaten up by Police at Bairamgarh Police Station on the evening of 10.12.09 and was released on 11.12.09. 
 
NHRC had received a complaint in this regard by Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves on 12.12.09 and this complaint was placed before the Commission on 18.12.09, on which NHRC issued notice to concerned SSPs who have to file their reply within two weeks.
