In India, an encounter is a term used by the police to refer to deadly action taken by police during an alleged encounter with a suspected 'terrorist'. The implicit claim in the term is that the target of police action was either engaged in or was attempting to engage in deady violence, and that the police merely acted in self-defence and the public interest by killing the alleged "terrorist." The term gained notoriety throughout India as a euphemism for extra-judicial killings by police since the 1980s in areas where social conflicts or insurgencies prevail, and is now part of the public discourse.
